INTRODUCTION TO MANAGEMENT

General Management is the process of managing the overall activities of a business. General Managers are active in their role as the representative of the business, so he/she is also responsible for the communications in the business. ELIGIBILITY

Candidates applying for a Master’s Degree/ Post Graduate Diploma in General Management must be a graduate in any discipline. Depending on the nature of course and the admission criteria of the respective institutions, candidates may have to appear for an entrance test followed by a group discussion (GD) and personal interview. The admission test is usually an objective test that analyzes the basic quantitative, verbal and analytical skills of the candidate.

Most of the business colleges in India offer Post Graduate Degree/ Diploma in General Management. They accept Common Admission Test (CAT) score as the standard scale to assess the caliber of the candidate. A reasonable CAT score should secure you admission in leading business colleges in India.

The curriculum designed for General Management courses provides candidates with the opportunity to identify their specific areas of interest and acquire the skills to pursue a career in that area of management. This could be marketing, organizational leadership, operations management, communications or the like.

SCOPE OF MANAGEMENT COURSES

A degree/diploma in General Management opens the door to infinite career options in Management in India. Apart from offering the role as Managers in different types of organizations, a degree in General Management helps one increase the chances of promotions in an existing job. General Managers are paid anywhere between 20,000-40,000 initially depending on the status of institution where he/she has passed out.

A Master’s degree in General Management is the first step of the ladder in your path to success. After earning considerable experience in the industry, you could adorn top-level posts like a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Country Manager or equivalent, depending on the hierarchy of your organization, and you could earn anywhere between Rs.1 lakh and 2 lakhs.

MBA courses are not suitable for recent graduates (a specialist masters degree may be a suitable alternative). Usually you are expected to have 3 or more years of work experience. The average age of people on full-time MBA programmes is about 27. Full-time MBA courses typically last between 1 year and 2 years. - 1-year courses are the most common type in the UK. Short courses are cheaper and more intensive than longer ones, but the majority of your time may be spent on "core" skills rather than on electives. - 2-year courses are normal in the US, and there are some in the UK too. Longer courses are more expensive, but may allow you to specialise more. Part-time MBA courses are more variable in length. If you want to take this type of course, think carefully about how you will be able to balance conflicting requirements of your job, family and study. Distance learning MBA courses are becoming more common. Not that this way of studying requires a lot of self-discipline, and that the parts of the course involving teamwork can become time-consuming.
