Social Science deals with subjects that affect the way people live in the society. While some of these subjects are directly linked to the society in general, others deal with specific aspects of the society. Social Science courses, therefore, aim to impart an education that touches upon contemporary social, political and economical issues prevailing in the society.
Social Science courses are divided into different categories depending on the specialization it offers. They include the following:
• Anthropology
• Archaeology
• Criminology
• Development Studies
• Economics
• Education
• Geography
• History
• Law
• Linguistics
• Political Science
• Sociology
• International Relations
• Communications

A student who wants to specialize in any of the above mentioned courses can opt for the undergraduate and/or post-graduate programs offered through various universities in India. Most of the undergraduate programs are offered as three-year degree course (Bachelor of Arts orB.A.). However, the following courses are exceptions.
Bachelor of Law (LLB): LLB is offered through different law colleges – both private and public – affiliated with different universities in India. There are two types of graduate courses offered for Law. They include 3-year courses and 5-year courses. Three-year course is offered for graduates whereas 5-year course is offered for undergraduates (10+2).
Bachelor of Education (B.Ed): This is intended to prepare the candidates to become the teachers of tomorrow.
Some of the Social Science courses are also offered as short-term certificate courses. For example, courses like International Relations, Communications and Linguistics areoffered as Certificate courses through different public/private institutes in India.
Post-Graduate Courses: Students can pursue post graduation (Master of Arts) in any of the above disciplines except Law and Education. Law graduates can opt for Master of Law (LLM) and candidates with B.Ed can pursue M.Ed.

Social science graduates can be employed in different categories of jobs ranging from clerks to civil servants. Professional degrees like LLB, B.Ed, LLM and M.Ed can
fetch them great opportunities in the respective fields.
