The Institute of Science, Mumbai, formerly known as the Royal Institute of Science (RIS), was established in 1920. The Institute, managed by the Government of Maharashtra and affiliated to the University of Mumbai, is a full-fledged premier post-graduate center for teaching and research in Science. For Subjects like Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Institute was the only center for Postgraduate education in the University of Mumbai until very recently. The award of Ph. D and M.Sc Degrees is by University of Mumbai , and examinations are conducted by The University of Mumbai, but the admission to the Courses in the Institute is done separately by the Institute. M.Sc. Mathematics course is conducted under the Internal Assessment scheme of University of Mumbai and results are very good.

A proper and efficient management of any Institute requires equally efficient administrative back-up. The Institute, managed by the Government of Maharashtra, is a well administered one, with adequate office staff, which includes a Registrar, P.A. to the Director, steno, Head Clerk and several clerks. In addition, various departments are assisted by adequate number of administrative, technical and laboratory assistants, laboratory attendants, peons etc.
The Institute has a central store, efficiently managed by store officer, store keeper and other supportive staff. The Institute has rate contracts with several dealers for the regular requirements of chemicals, glasswares etc. Other requirements are obtained by following the usual government procedures.

There is hostel facility for boys as well as girls. In almost every academic program there are equal if not more, in number lady students.
