The genesis of TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI, a not for profit independent research institute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development.
The University was established and constituted on 19 August 1998 and was granted 'Deemed-to-be University' status by the University Grants Commission and notified vide Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Government of India (notification no.F-9/19/95-U-3 dated 5 October 1999).
The relationship with TERI has propelled and influenced the evolution of its academic units. This relationship is enshrined in a memorandum of understanding between

The TERI University is situated at Plot No. 10, Institutional Area, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, close to the Grand Hotel. A modern 'green' building has been designed. The TERI University campus was inaugurated by Her Excellency, The President of India, Shrimati Pratibha Devisingh Patil on 11 September 2008
An architectural delight, the campus has been planned to provide a setting that enhances learning, while simultaneously showcasing the concept of modern green buildings. Besides passive energy saving architectural designs, the buildings will boast of the use of solar energy and an earth-air tunnel to meet part of the airconditioning requirements. This technology uses the heat sink property of earth to maintain comfortable temperatures inside the building. Supplementary systems
Summer Internship
The Summer Internship Programme aims to widen the student's perspective by providing an exposure to real life issues related to infrastructure, regulation, conservation, management, policy, and economics of natural resources. Positioned between the second and third semesters, the internship enables the students to understand and apply the interdisciplinary relationships to tackle various issues related to environment/natural resources, infrastructure.
