The institute is an autonomous body, fully funded by Govt. Of India and controlled by SLIET society, registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860. The institute awards its own certificates and Diplomas approved and recognized by AICTE, New Delhi. Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses are affiliated to Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar. Ph.D. programmes have also been started in collaboration with PTU and other neighboring Universities.

It was formulated that the institute, besides catering to the needs of formal education would undertake an arduous task to prepare the skilled and qualified manpower for self employment. Further, the institute would take up a strategic research and development activities which along with entrepreneurship will help in extending the efforts of the institute in imparting education to the unemployed and working population by updating and upgrading their technical skills. The institute was thought to cater to then existing 3-tier system to modern industry, which incorporates workers, technicians and engineers.

The institute has a sprawling area of 451 acres of land provided by Punjab Government. Surrounded by lush green land, the campus of the institute extends a beautiful and well developed area with many topographically featured picturesque landscape, numerous buildings of various nature and stature and metal road network. The campus presents a spectacle of harmony and natural beauty. It is embedded with all the amenities required for a complete township.

   1.Formal shape was given to the idea of a Nationl Level Institute in the Rural Backdrop of the    Longowal Village,1989.

The Central Library is housed in a modern building having all kinds of facilities for its best utilization by the student community. It has large number of volume of technical books along with a good collection of books on literature, general awareness, management and moral sciences etc. The central library is already subscribing to a large number of National and International journals. Besides print subscription users are having access to full text of articles from journals under INDEST Consortium. The central library is having all the modern facilities like Plasma TV; MMP; CTV; OHP; Slide Projector etc. A good collection of VCD's as well as CD ROMs is also available in the library. Efforts have been made so that users may feel comfort while they study or consult library

 The Health Center has been established in the institute premises in a covered area of approx. 400 sq mts.,with capicity of four beds. It provides day to day medical facilities at primary level to the students,staff and faculty.For general awareness ,Health Center organise various seminar/camps with the help of Distt.Health Deptt.

SLIET Workshops
Introduction
SLIET provides practical training to the students of all branches. It also provides practical training and experience to the students under 'Non-formal' Programmes. Manufacture and repairing of institute's furniture is also done in the workshops. It also conduct short orientation programmes for skill development of faculty and staff.

Recreational & entertainment facilities
The Institute provides a lot of facilities to its residents for recreation and entertainment to make the life full of vigour some which are mentioned.
1. Playgrounds and Stadium
Almost all indoor and outdoor sports facilities exist in the Institute. There is a Stadium, which is used for Athletics Meets, Cricket Matches. Sports Department has developed Football Ground, Volleyball Arena, Basketball Grounds, Lawn Tennis Courts, Hockey Grounds and Gymnastic Arena. Kabbadi and Judo matches are also organized. Special night matches of Fun Cricket are organised, in which Faculty also participates whole-heartedly along with the students.

The institute has a Student Activity Center, which is used to channelize the creative instincts of the students. The institute encourages polymorphic activities through Hobbies Club, Photography Club, Philatelic Club, Numismatic Club and Literary Society. It houses indoor games like Billiards, Squash, Table Tennis, Badminton, Carrom and Chess etc. SAC has Yoga Hall, Meeting Hall, Projects Development Center and Shopping Booths besides a well-equipped gymnasium for the students. Apart from this for engaging students in other activities the institute has set up Cultural Committee, NSS Unit, Drama Circle, Ncc Unit and SPIC MACAY.
