Maulana Azad Medical College and associated hospital complex consist of four integral units, names Maulana Azad Medical College, Lok Nayak Hospital, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital and Guru Nanak Eye Centre. The college was established twenty two years after the commissioning of Irwin Hospital, a well established general hospital drawing patients mainly from Delhi and from the neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
This ideally situated general hospital with long years of reputation paved the way for realization of this medical college.

The college made its humble beginning in hospital block of Irwin (Lok Nayak) hospital 1958. The foundation of main building of the college was laid by Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, the then Home Minister of India, on 24th October, 1959. this building was declared open by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on 26th February, 1961.
In 1964, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital was added to the complex to provide training facilities and super-specialties. The Guru Nanak Eye Centre came into existence on 20th December, 1977 with the commissioning of a separate out patient department for ophthalmic diseases. The wards for the indoor patients were added in 1986. The long awaited demand of the residents of Union Territory of Delhi for a Dental wing was met with the establishment of a separate Dental Wing in 1983. This wing has become fully established Dental College since 2003.

The Lecture Theatres and auditorium are well equipped with public address system having microphones and facilities to record the lectures and discussions. The facilities like epidiascopes, slide projectors, overhead projectors and film projectors are also available. All Lecture Theatres are air-conditioned.

Two hundred computers were distributed to various departments including the Administrative block, Account section and Academic section. The Account section has been connected through NIC for processing of salary bills. Central command is from LAN Server facility stationed in the college administrative block. A sum of Rs. 291/-

A sum of Rs. 291/- lacs was utilized/allocated for execution of the first phase. The second phase of implementation involved as addition of 150 nodes. The whole institution has been computersized and connected by internet. Internet facility is available to all faculty members. A sum of Rs. 110/- lacs has been utilized for the second phase. The laboratoties are in the process of total computerization. In the extension phase of this project, all the faculty members will have e-mail account, the library will be connected to the desktop of each faculty member. Beside the computers and internet facilities available in the library, students also have access to computers in the various departments of the institution.
Cyber Cafe: Cyber Cafe has been started in the Institution. Students can avail the facilities at reasonable charges.
The College has one of the finest libraries with an impressive collection of literature, The liabrary is centrally air-conditioned and recently renovated It has spacious reading rooms for students where they can study up till late hours. It has a large number of books and journals and modern self-learning facility through audio-visual aids to keep the readers abreast of latest medical developments all over the world. The library has also acquired computer with 8 terminals having modern Medlar facility for literature search. This has served as unique educational support for postgraduate students as well as teachers. Print out facility for CD-ROM database is also available.
In addition to the books available in the main College Library, each department has a Book Bank from which books are issued to the needy and deserving undergraduate students at a nominal subscription of Rs. 3/- per book per annum, as per rules in force.
New: New Airconditioned guest house having 20 rooms and all facilities is available for the Guests of the Institution at reasonable charges. Prof. J.C. Passey, Deptt. of E.N.T. is incharge of the Guest House. (Telephone No. 23239271 Extn. No. 292: Guest House)
PG Men’s Hostel : Guest House with 12 air conditioned rooms is available in PG Men’s Hostel at nominal charges. Dr. G.K. Ingle is incharge of this guest house.
