The Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS), Manipal, formerly known as the College of Dental Surgery, is the first self-financing dental college in the private sector of India. Established in the year 1965, it initially had an intake of 40 students and later increased to 100 from 1983 - 84 onwards.
The inception of MCODS, Manipal was a significant milestone in the history of University. From the humble beginnings in a thatched roof structure with limited facilities, it has grown to be the top rated college in the country, according to a survey by the magazine “Outlook” in June, 2009. This feat was repeated yet again in 2010 when MCODS Manipal was ranked first among the institutes providing dental education.

A state of the art dental clinic with sophisticated infrastructure, equipped with endosonics, cryosurgery, ultrasonic scalers, orthopantomography, digital radiography, computerised cephalometrics, laser fluorescence carrier detectors as well as several other recent paraphernalia in each dental specialty. Excellent air-conditioned laboratory facilities especially phantom head labs, equipped with 100 dental workstations for pre-clinical training simulating dental treatment. Manipal University has a separate hostel section under the management of Hostel Management Committee. This committee is headed by its Chairperson. The Chief Warden, MU, Manipal Campus who is the secretary of the Committee administers the day to day aspects of the hostel management at Manipal. All the hostels of the University are divided into three campuses.
