

Government Arts College, Coimbatore, had a very humble beginning when it was founded in 1852 as an Anglo-Vernacular School. It became a middle school in 1861. In 1867 it became a high school. In 1868, First of Arts ( F.A. ) classes were started and in 1869 the first University classes were started. In 1870 it became a second grade college. Thus, the college came into existence during the colonial rule long before the establishment of the University of Madras. The products of this college had actively participated in India’s freedom movement and thus, the classrooms of this ancient institution have determined the destiny of India in obtaining its freedom.

The aims of the college is as follows:
Giving guidance to students to get employable skills,
Finding a better and suitable career for every student,
Catering the manpower needs of the industry, and
Creating awareness among the students regarding opportunities available in
other educational institutions and industries.
To fulfill the above said aims, the cell has been conducting free coaching classes for competitive examinations like civil services (UPSC), TNPSC examinations, Railway recruitment board exams, etc.
To motivate and guide the students, the cell organized various personality development meetings and seminars by inviting IAS and IPS officers and other suitable persons from various industries.

All I and II year students must enroll themselves in one of the co-curricular activities namely, NCC, NSS, YRC, Sports and Games.
Each student should undergo four Semesters of training / classes / activities.
He / She will be assessed for 2 credits.
Institution Training and Camp Training are given to the students.
NCC:
On the basis of Academic performance and NCC activities, scholarships are granted by Government of TamilNadu and DG NCC Delhi.
1.Hostel facilities are available in the campus for men students.
2.Off campus hostel facilities are available for both men and women students belonging to BC / MBC /SC /ST communities, which are being run by the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Tamilnadu.
3.The Facilities provided in the boys hostel are as follows :
Fully furnished hostel with 62 rooms to accommodate 200 students with mess facility. Besides this off-campus BC / MBC / SC / ST hostel facilities are also available for both men and women students.
Room system is being followed in the hostel and 3 persons are accommodated in a room.
Adequate toilets, bathing rooms and enough water ( drinking and bore
well ) facilities are available.
