Chitrabani is the social communication centre sponsored by the Kolkata Province of the Society of Jesus. The involvement of the Society of Jesus and of its college (St. Xavier's) in the mass media is indeed the logical extension of a long involvement in education. The objective of Chitrabani is to spread a mass media culture that helps people to integrate harmoniously the communication media into their cultural lives. Thus, people will benefit from the media while remaining free in front of them, and will eventually become responsible communicators themselves.

There is facility for VCD and DVD mastering , using Pioneer DVD writer/rewriter.
Chitrabani's sound recording studio has come a long way; it was a pioneer in offering quality recording facilities from the beginning; with the changing technology, Chitrabani possesses the state of the art digital sound recording facilities with post-production facilities.
Chitrabani now has one of the best fully digital sound studios in the city, with Soundscape, and CD mastering facilities for professional film, video dubbing and music recording.
There is another recording studio with Soundscape and analog multi-track facilities for production and training.

Concrete proposals are invited from NGOs and other governmental agencies to utilise the Sound Recording Studio facilities! Chitrabani is also interested in offering Packages in film dubbing at a very reasonable competetive rates. Those Interested in availing the Package system could contact the Director.
Chitrabani Subsidised Projects
Chitrabani being a Catholic institution is prepared to undertake sound recording and sound post production works of Catholic and Christian institutions on a package system. Chitrabani would partly subsidise the projects.

She wrote INDIAN CINEMA TODAY: AN ANALYSIS, 1975, and YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE: FILM CENSORSHIP - THE INSIDE STORY, 1982.

When Chitrabani was created in 1970, Mrs Ray gave it full support. And when the centre was registered in 1979, she was its advisor along with Mr Satyajit Ray.

As a token of appreciation for her contribution to film studies in this country and for her constant support of Chitrabani, and to embody permanently her deep appreciation for the cinema and its role in society, the Chitrabani library and viewing hall have been named after her.
The Ray's family have donated to the library Rita Ray's collection of 8 mm film classics, her collection of nearly 4000 stills from or about films, and her books on cinema.
The Library contains 12,000 books and 50 magazines on :

•Still Photography,
•Cinema
•Cultural Studies.

The library books and magazines have been computerised, so that one could trace the desired book without much searching.
