The AAAT was established in 2003 with the intention of providing strong foundational and advanced courses in classical animation. The AAAT's intensive one-year program places equal emphasis on the art and craft of animation with a comprehensive curriculum. Students work in a studio environment equipped with the entire necessary infrastructure.
Students can learn the cornerstones of animation techniques by studying essential skills such as story boarding, layout, design, animation, production, and computer-generated animation.
The Academy's teaching methodology is designed to nurture the aptitude and creative virtuosity of each individual. To enable large numbers of talented students to enroll, the AAAT offers financial aid in the form of heavy subsidization of its courses. By the end of the year one emerges with a reel displaying original production, and the ability to communicate creatively in a charged studio environment.
Currently, The AAAT has launched its production house Metaphor Studios in Kolkata. Metaphor, a full fledged animation production house is the launch pad for students passing out from The AAAT after successful completion of a full time course.

Well, the bare truth is that excellence in Animation requires a thorough knowledge of traditional 2D (or "classical") animation, without which animators, whatever their medium, 2D, 3D, Flash or Clay, are inadequately equipped to work in the industry. At AAAT, Classical Animation training is medium independent. Be it 2D, 3D OR Flash, Classical Animation fundamentals are the same across all medium.
Classical animation has been around for well over 100 years. With the rise of Walt Disney in 1930s and a host of other talented animators, the floodgates opened and the field rose to prominence. Animation went through many stages as it went through major upheavals in response to changing audience tastes and technology. Eventually with the advent of computers animated films have become richly designed worlds with amazing depths of colour and detail.
Animation programs worldwide focus on strong foundations and lay great emphasis to the art aspect which includes drawing and animation techniques to start. The better classes will then go into story design, storyboarding, anatomy and more advanced animated projects. The further you go into these courses, the more cinematic your assignments become. Before long, you have a professional-looking portfolio of animated work.
To be a sophisticated animator means knowing the fine art of telling a story through movement, integrating creative vision with technological limitations – knowing how to breathe life where there is none.
Though 3D animation is receiving more and more attention recently, it will always have its roots in Classical Animation techniques and traditional story-telling foundation. 3D animation is built on the foundation of Traditional 2D animation.
Every animated film produced today is actually a hybrid of what we can think of as classical animation methods, and modern computer-generated imagery. The more proficient you become with the classical foundations of animation, the more skillful will be your use of modern digital technology. By learning the cornerstone of animation techniques – drawing, storyboarding, layout, background and character design – you will gain a thorough understanding of physical motion, weight and balance, and the different properties of texture and form. Mastering these classical animation skills will help define your success as a professional animator.
