Introduction about Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the combination of biology and technology. This combined science is now emerging as one of the most lucrative career options for the intelligent candidates in India. Biotechnology primarily refers to the application of technology on living cells - of plants or animals - to create a new product or make modifications in the existing products. It also refers to the usage of living organisms for the creation of organic products useful for the mankind.

Biotechnology has grown to different fields such as Bioinformatics, Agricultural biotechnology, Bio fertilizers, National Bio-resource Development, Plant Biology, Marine Biotechnology and more.

Biotechnology courses have wide acceptance in India too. There are excellent institutions that offer undergraduate and post-graduate programs in biotechnology. The following are the programs offered under Biotechnology.

Courses Offered

Undergraduate Programs in Biotechnology:

B.Sc Biotechnology (3-year program)

B.E in Biotechnology (4-year program)

B.Tech in Biotechnology (4-year program)

Integrated B.Tech/M.Tech in Biotechnology (5-year program)

Eligibility: Candidates who have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and any of the Biological Sciences are eligible to the above courses. Admission to most of the institutes is based on the scores obtained in the entrance tests conducted by respective institutes.

Post Graduate Courses in Biotechnology:

In addition to the integrated course, students can also opt for Masters in Biotechnology directly after graduation. Graduates in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Microbiology are eligible for the PG courses. Final decision on admission will be based on the results of the entrance tests conducted by individual institutes.

Ph. D in Biotechnology

After post graduation, students can join for research in any of the specialized branches of biotechnology.

Scope of Biotechnology as a career

A survey conducted by Ernst and Young predicted that India will become the breeding ground for biotechnology in the near future. Considering the mammoth population and agricultural resources in the country, India offers a lot of scope for research in biotechnology.

Graduates/Post Graduates in Biotechnology can seek great opportunities in different public/private sector research organizations that specialize in either of the following categories of biotechnology: Bioinformatics, Agricultural biotechnology, Bio fertilizers, National Bio-resource Development, Plant Biology, Marine Biotechnology and more. Ph.D holders are accepted as part of the research projects going on in these organizations.
