Pythagoras rightly said, "Choices are the hinges of destiny", our whole life depends on the choices we make. Choosing a career path is the one of the biggest decision and it has to be taken very early in life. Making a career choice needs a thorough self analysis, deep introspection and research on career options. Let us deconstruct the whole process of making career choice in few simple steps to help students to deal it with ease:

a) Identify your interests

Somebody has rightly said "Chose a career you love, you won't have a single day to work." Just identify your interests and chase your dreams. In case you are not consistent about your dream career, just analyze them. To identify your interests, list them down with reference to your career. Your interest can span from subjects you love the most or activities which attract you. Just try to figure out a career which includes your interest and choose your subjects accordingly. Relate to your life experience to tell you about likes and dislikes.

b) Know your strengths

Your strengths can be in form of  :

Natural Talent : Everybody has his own natural strengths and it is important to know that. There are things which one can do effortlessly without much practice or training and that is your talent. Think about the activities or subjects where you used to excel in school even that can be a good pointer to your talent.

Family Background : Your family background can be one important parameter to help you in your successful career. It is an easy way to overcome initial blues which one is sure to meet at least in initial phase of his career. All the learning is in house, support is assured and corrections are very timely.

Acquired Skills : Skills which you have acquired and mastered over a period of time.

c) Explore the choices
For each occupation on your list, look at the job description, educational and other requirements. Look for job outlook, future  opportunities and earnings.

d) Take help :

It is absolutely important to take pertinent  help at each stage of your career, man is a social animal and we should not hestitae in it :

  • Take help from your family and friends, once you have framed your mind in one direction.
  • You can also take help from career counsellors or career development professionals.
  • Help yourself with self assessment tools to gather information about your interests, strengths etc.
  • Just look for a help from professional who are actually practicing the careers which you deem to choose, they will give you the best inputs.
Once you have zeroed about your career, do align yourself fully to meet it. At this stage it apt to quote, Ralph Waldo Emerson "Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” , so don’t  worry about your decision, take it and pursue it with full vigour.

All the best !!
