While more and more students are getting accepted into college all over the country, when they graduate, it is just a handful that are employable. This poses a very important question of where does the problem lie ? One major issue is that of skill gap. There is a major gap between the Industry expectation from the fresher and the actual skills of a fresher.
As per the latest NASSCOM report in April 2011, NASSCOM had said that only 10 to 25% of engineering and IT graduates are readily employable, while only 15% graduates are suitable for back-end jobs in office . Many big Industries have stopped employing a fresh graduate as it means a lot of expenditure to him .
If we take a bigger view ,only 10% of the 30 Lakh students that graduate are deemed unemployable.
The situation is grave and needs some very serious efforts to address it . The major stake holders are :
a) Education Institutes b) Ministry of HRD , GOI
c) Industry d) Students
If we understand the role of each one of them it won’t take us much time to that it is the Schools / Institutes will have to take the maximum blame.
What Institutes need to do is to take an holistic approach towards this serious problem . They need to stop taking it as another money minting venture. A sincere effort needs to be made to streamline courses with practical know how so that students are ready to face the world and accept the challenges that are thrown at them. Apart from make it compulsory for students to have Industrial trainings, the teachers themselves need to take part in Industry workshop to help upgrade themselves to help grooming students better.
In one of the findings students were found below expectations in attitudes like – self motivation, self discipline, commitment and dedication. Their knowledge of the organisational processes, product solutions, services and consumer behaviour too was not up to the mark.
Educational Institutes needs to address these issues seriously and student community need to increase their listening power and fully cooperate with faculty on this issue.
New techniques and subjects that can help students find a job is necessary and that needs to be the focus of educational institutions all across the country
Courses like lateral thinking, entrepreneurship are an absolute must if India needs to produces graduates that can stand on their own two feet and exude the confidence that is needed to secure a well paying job. The time is now, and every year this problem is avoided, the system of higher education is going to be more challenged.
GOI on its part needs to work on stringent policies as far as the affiliations to Institutes and granting Universities are concerned .
Industry needs to work in tandem with educational fraternity to guide them about the Industry dynamics and its expectations. They need to facilitate students with frequent workshops and Industry exposure .
Students too need work honestly with the Industry which spends a lot on their trainings and need to repay back in one way or other so as to maintain a healthy ground between students and the Industry. They also need to be more proactive , self motivated , committed and dedicated to help others to help them.

I agree , the main culprit is the Institute who only want to earn.
